Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

SHOULD I USE A SOLAR BLANKET ON MY POOL? HOW DO THEY WORK?

The use of a solar blanket is twofold. Not only will it increase the water temperature but it will also decrease evaporation. With good sun exposure it will increase the temperature approximately 10 degrees in a week.

HOW AND WHEN DO I BACKWASH?

First follow the instructions to backwash. Look at the pressure gauge when finished. When the pressure rises 10 lbs. above that reading, it is time to backwash again. INSTRUCTIONS are: Tum off the pump. Turn valve handle to backwash position. Turn pump on and let pump run for one to two minutes or until water appears clear/clean. Turn pump back off and turn valve handle to the rinse position. Turn pump on and run pump for ten to thirty seconds. Follow these steps three or four times. Return to filter position. ALWAYS remember to turn OFF the mp when moving the filter valve handle. DE filters will follow the same instructions, but at the end of the backwash cycle, remember to add DE filter powder to the skimmer to recharge the filter.

HOW DO I BACKWASH MY CARTRIDGE FILTER?

Cartridge filters are not backwashed, Turn the pump off and open the filter tank. Cartridge filters are cleaned by removing the cartridge then using a filter cleaner and a garden hose to clean the inside and outside of the cartridge. Replace cartridge and secure tank. Prime and start the pump.

HOW DO I PRIME THE PUMP?

Remove the pump lid and fill the pump pot with water. Replace the lid o’ring and lid. Turn on the pump.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO RUN MY PUMP?

Cartridge and filters need the pump to run 24/7. DE filters need the pump to run eight hours a day. DE filters will filter much smaller particles from the water than SAND filters.

Troubleshooting

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAND, DE AND CARTRIDGE FILTERS?

Sand, the most common filter, should be backwashed weekly. Change the sand every 3 to 4 years. Cartridge filters filter smaller particles from the water than sand filters. The cartridge/cartridges will need to be replaced when they no longer keep the pool clear & clean. DE filters filter smaller particles from the water than sand or cartridge therefore the pump can run fewer hours per day. They do require that you backwash them but not as often as sand. After backwashing the DE filter, you must add new DE powder to the skimmer. All filters should be chemically cleaned once a season.

WHAT SANITIZER IS BEST FOR MY POOL?

Sanitizers are a matter of preference. Salt generators are the latest rage and make the care of the pool very convenient. Chlorine tablets, bromine tablets, ionization, ozone and biguanide are all options depending upon your individual needs.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO REPLACE THE SAND IN MY FILTER?

Sand should be replaced every 3 to 4 years according to your filter manufacturer's instructions.

HOW LONG DO DE GRIDS LAST?

DE grids will usually last 8 to 10 years. They can be changed individually.

HOW LONG WILL MY VINYL LINER LAST?

Pool liners vary in lifetime. In a chemically well maintained pool, a liner should last 8 to 12 years — perhaps even longer.

WHY IS WATER RUNNING OUT MY BACKWASH LINE WHEN IAM IN THE FILTER MODE?

A gasket inside the valve has failed and needs to be replaced.

MY MOTOR IS MAKING A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE. WHY?

A bearing has gone bad in the motor.

THE PRESSURE ON THE FILTER IS HIGH. WHAT DO I DO?

Backwash the filter then check the gauge. lf the pressure is still high, turn the pump off and look at the gauge. lt may need to be replaced or your filter media (sand, DE, or cartridge) may need to be replaced or cleaned.
